In the used car export market in China, several giants control the overall situation, using the manufacturing advantages of China and cost-effective solutions to serve global demand. Leading its automotive exports are Geely, Chery and BYD, which have broadened their presence in the market for new cars to include businesses relating to used vehicles as well. In 2022, Geely posted a year on year growth of 20 per cent in its overseas sales, as this was due to the appetite for used models out of Southeast Asia and Africa. In addition, Chery has built an important export outlet, exporting more than 500,000 cars classified in new and used (reused) category in more than 80 countries on a yearly base.
The export business of companies like Uxin and Guazi, two major online used car platforms, has also expanded. Founded in 2011, Uxin has created a connection for international buyers to browse and buy verified used cars complete with detailed inspection reports, allowing for easier cross-border transactions. The growing Chinese used car export market, rising by an average of 15% annually for platforms that have emerged since 2023 as these difficulties filter through into industry reports.
Shenzhen-based BYD has been starting to build a used electric car business too thanks to the growing industry for cleaner transportation. For example, it is reported from a number of Chinese cities that their secondhand EVs are in demand in developing markets due to the long-lasting battery life and low prices. BYD is definitely one of the significant exporter in China on sustainable mobility, as by 2023 EV contributes to about 10% of overall automotive exports.
