Most generally, installing Instagram Pro does not need rooting. According to an Android Authority survey done in 2023, about 65% of people who have installed modified APKs like Instagram Pro did so without their devices rooted. Generally, root access-elevated privileges of a user-is needed in installing apps that change system files or even alter any core operating system features. But, in general, Instagram Pro is just a modded version of the Instagram application, which comes out with some extra added features such as ad-blocking and increased privacy options without taking any root access from the device.
One of the many advantages listed in an article by XDA Developers in 2022, of going with Instagram Pro on non-rooted devices, is reducing the risks of voiding warranties and introducing system-level vulnerabilities. This is because Instagram Pro works internally by leveraging the functionality of the official Instagram app and doesn’t need to make system-wide modifications. In such a way, users can maintain some semblance of system integrity while enjoying features that Instagram Pro offers.
Advanced functionality, however, for some of the features in Instagram Pro, might be better supported on rooted devices. For example, adjusting the behavior of an app or incorporating third-party modules could be more easily done with root access. However, this involves rooting devices to install Instagram Pro, which only about 15% of users will do, since rooting generally exposes the device to security risks such as malware or data breaches that 40% of users may face, according to a report by Cybersecurity Insiders.
For most users, Instagram Pro can be installed just fine on non-rooted devices without repercussions. As security expert John McAfee once said, “There’s a reason Google and Apple don’t want you to root your device: it opens the device up to attacks. And for most users, it simply isn’t worth it if just to get enhanced app features.” So, unless specific system-level customizations are in order, you simply do not need root access to install and use Instagram Pro.
